Stadt - Rocca d'Evandro
Da die Beschreibung auf Deutsch unverfügbar ist, bieten wir Ihnen die Übersetzung auf Englisch.

Rocca D’Evandro lies at the foot of Camino mount. Its ancient castle dominates the vast Garigliano valley. The fortress dates back to the x century and overlooks Ausoni, Cairo mounts and Mainarde thus creating an extremely interesting area.

The origins of the village are very ancient and uncertain as well as those of its name. Long before the Middle Age, this village was known as “Rocca di Bandra” or “Rocca di Vandra”. A document dating 11 July 961 states that Capua and Benevento princes gave the village to San Salvatore monastery. In 1117 and 1343 the village was devastated by strong earthquakes. The Rocca was then completely rebuilt. Because of its privileged position the village is strongly contended until Montecassino abbots succeeded in conquer it.

At the beginning of 1500 Rocca D’Evandro, together with Camino and Mignano is owned by Ettore Fieramosca, the hero of Barletta fight. In 1534 Carlo V gave the village to the poetess Vittoria Colonna as a reward to have sent food and scouts during Lautrec assault.

Rocca D’Evandro history follows the one of its caslte. The fortress looks as it does today thanks to the restoration works made in XVII and XVIII centuries. In 1980 the municipality bought the castle and placed there the Museum of local civilizations where prehistoric, roman and medieval remains can be seen.

The major monuments are: Santa Maria Maggiore curch where you can visit the splendid altar with the XVIII century choir on wood. Farneto church, Monte Camino sanctuary that can be reached by foot only, Eterno Padre a Vallevona hermitage (XVI century), Santa Maria di Mortola church and the rests of San Tommaso chapel (XV century).
